How long before I can roll my windows down after tint?
Aftercare & warranty · · 4 min read
Wait at least 48 hours before you roll down your windows after window tint. The film goes on wet and needs that time to bond to the glass; lower a window too soon and the door seal can catch the edge of the film and lift it. A little haze or a few small water pockets while it dries is normal and fades as the film dries out.
How long should you wait to roll down windows after tint?
Wait at least 48 hours before you roll down your windows after a window tint install. The film goes on wet, and it needs those two days to bond to the glass. Lower a window too soon and the rubber seal in the door can catch the edge of the film and lift it. That 48-hour rule applies to every film we install at Edgeless Auto Tint in South Gate, from 3M Obsidian to 3M Crystalline.

Can I roll my windows down after 24 hours?
No. 24 hours is not enough. The film needs at least 48 hours before the windows go down, and on a cool or damp day it is still drying after that. If you are not sure, give it longer. Waiting an extra day costs you nothing. Lifting an edge on day one means the window has to be redone.
Why you have to keep tinted windows up
Window tint goes on the inside of the glass, and it goes on wet. We spray the glass and the film with a slip solution, set the film in place, then squeegee most of the water out from behind it. The last of that moisture has to dry out before the adhesive grips the glass properly.
Until it does, the film is in place but not yet bonded. Side windows are where that matters. When a window goes down, the glass slides past the rubber seal at the bottom of the door, and that seal rubs against the edge of the film. On fresh film, that can lift, peel or crease the edge. Once an edge has lifted, it will not lie flat again by itself.
That is the most common way a good tint job gets damaged in its first week, and it is completely avoidable.
Tips for the first 48 hours after window tint
- Leave the window switches alone. A strip of painter's tape over each switch is an easy reminder, for you and for anyone else who drives the car.
- If kids ride in the back, use the window lock on the driver's door.
- Plan ahead for drive-throughs, parking gates and toll booths. Open the door instead of the window, or use a window that was not tinted.
- Leave the inside of the tinted glass alone while it dries. No wiping, no cleaning.
Is it normal for new tint to look hazy or have bubbles?
Yes, at first. For the first days, new window tint can look slightly hazy, and you may see small water pockets or a faint blotchy look, especially on the rear window. That is the moisture still working its way out from behind the film. It fades on its own as the film dries, and it takes longer when the weather is cool or damp, like a South Gate morning in November.
Do not try to push the water pockets out with a fingernail, a card or a squeegee. You can scratch the film or move it.
If something still does not look right once the film has had time to dry, such as a bubble that stays, a speck trapped under the film or an edge that has lifted, call or text us at (323) 542-3773 and we will take a look. That is what we are here for.
How do I clean tinted windows?
Once your tint has cured, it is easy to live with. Clean the inside of the glass with a soft, non-abrasive cloth or towel and clean water, or a cleaner that is labelled safe for window tint. Do not use Windex or any other ammonia-based glass cleaner on tinted windows.
Does the 3M warranty cover my tint?
Every 3M film we install carries a lifetime warranty for the original owner. Keep the warranty card or the 3M email you receive after your install, because that is what the warranty is claimed with. For how long each film lasts, see /faq/how-long-does-ceramic-tint-last.
Which window tint should you choose?
The 48-hour wait is the same for every film, so it should not decide which one you get. What should decide it is the job you want the film to do.
If heat is the reason, and on a Southern California summer afternoon it usually is, 3M Ceramic IR is the film we point people to. It rejects up to 95% of infrared heat and up to 66% of the sun's total energy, in seven shades. It is $425 for a coupe or sedan and $450 for an SUV or van, and it takes about two hours in the bay, a little longer for an SUV.
