Can you tint a Tesla Model 3 rear window in one piece?
Yes. The Model 3 rear glass is a single large curved pane, and it is fitted as one piece — no seam across the middle. It takes heat-shrinking the film to the curve before it goes on, which is a skill rather than a shortcut.
The Model 3 and Model Y rear glass is one of the harder pieces of glass to tint well. It is big, it is steeply curved in two directions, and there is nowhere to hide a mistake.
Why some shops seam it
A seam — two pieces of film meeting in the middle — is quicker and needs less skill, because flat film will lie down on a curve if you cut it in half. It is also visible for the life of the car, straight through the rear-view mirror.
How it should be done
The film is shrunk to the shape of the glass on the outside first, using heat, until it lies flat on the curve with no fingers or ripples. Only then does it go on the inside. Done properly there is no seam and no distortion.
Ask any shop quoting you on a Tesla whether the rear glass is done in one piece. The answer tells you a lot.
